Is the stock market open on Veterans Day? Yes. The NYSE and Nasdaq trade normally on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, even though the bond market and many banks close. That mismatch is why a stock market holiday calendar is harder to memorize than it looks.

Two weeks later, the market shuts for Thanksgiving, then closes three hours early on Black Friday. Here's the complete schedule through 2028, how the bond market differs, and what each date means for your trades, including the new overnight session that starts in December.

In 30 seconds

  • The stock market is open on Veterans Day, November 11, 2026, with regular hours from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET.
  • The NYSE and Nasdaq are closed on Thanksgiving, November 26, 2026, and on Christmas Day, December 25, 2026.
  • US stocks close early at 1:00 p.m. ET on November 27 and December 24, 2026.
  • The bond market closes on Veterans Day, so that day doesn't count as a settlement day for stock trades.

What stock market holidays are left in 2026?

The stock market holidays left in 2026 are Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26, and Christmas Day on Friday, December 25. There are also two early closes, on November 27 and December 24.

Bond market times are recommendations from SIFMA, the industry group that publishes the fixed income calendar. Individual firms decide for themselves whether their desks stay open.

Is the stock market open on Veterans Day?

Yes, the stock market is open on Veterans Day. Veterans Day is a federal holiday, but it isn't one of the 10 holidays the NYSE and Nasdaq observe in 2026, so stocks trade from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET as usual on Wednesday, November 11.

The bond market closes, and so do many banks. Two things change for traders.

Settlement slows by a day. Veterans Day isn't a settlement day. Stock trades normally settle one business day after the trade, so a sale on Tuesday, November 10, would settle on Thursday, November 12, instead of Wednesday. A sale on Veterans Day also settles Thursday. This matters most in a cash account, where trading with unsettled funds can trigger a violation. Our guide to margin and cash accounts explains why.

Your bond signal goes quiet. Many day traders watch the 10-year Treasury yield for clues about growth stocks. With cash bonds shut for the day, that signal is less useful. It's an awkward day for it, too, since October CPIThe Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a monthly U.S. government report measuring the average change in prices paid by consumers for goods and services — it's the most closely watched inflation indicator in the market.Read definition → lands at 8:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday, November 10, and bond desks will be closed the day after.

Stock trading itself runs normally, and so does the free Trade Ideas live trading room, which runs every market day. Treat Veterans Day as a regular session with one less input.

Is the stock market open on Thanksgiving and Black Friday?

The stock market is closed on Thanksgiving and open for a shortened session on Black Friday. In 2026, the NYSE and Nasdaq close all day on Thursday, November 26, then trade from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. ET on Friday, November 27.

That makes Wednesday, November 25, the last full session of the week. It's also a busy one for data, with October PCE scheduled that day.

The holiday week tends to be quiet. A Fidelity study cited in our low-volume trading playbook found US stock VolumeVolume is the total number of shares (or contracts) traded during a given time period — it's the primary confirmation tool for all price action, because a price move accompanied by high volume indicates genuine market participation, while tRead definition → typically falls to about 80% of normal the day before Thanksgiving and about 45% the day after. Lower volume can mean wider spreads and more false breakouts, so size down or take the day off if your setups need a lot of volume. Our guide to when to sit out covers how to make that call.

On NYSE Arca and the other NYSE markets with late sessions, After-Hours TradingTrading that occurs after the regular market session closes at 4:00 PM ET, typically available from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM ET. After-hours volume is usually thin, bid-ask spreads are wider, and price moves can be more dramatic and less reliableRead definition → ends at 5:00 p.m. ET on early close days. Eligible options close at 1:15 p.m. ET. Check your broker's hours, because the session you're used to may end sooner.

Three dates trip people up. There's no New Year's holiday in 2028, because January 1 falls on a Saturday. Christmas Day 2027 is observed on Friday, December 24. And Good Friday is a market holiday even though it isn't a federal one.

When does the stock market close early?

There's no early close on Christmas Eve 2027, because the market is fully closed that Friday for the observed holiday.

An early close moves your whole day forward. The last-hour rush arrives near 12:00 p.m. ET, and the closing auction happens at 1:00 p.m. If you normally hold a trade into the final hour, set an alert for the earlier time so you aren't caught in a closed market.

How is the bond market schedule different?

The bond market schedule differs because SIFMA sets it for fixed income, while each stock exchange sets its own calendar. Bonds close on two days that stocks stay open, Columbus Day and Veterans Day, and they close early at 2:00 p.m. ET on several days when stocks trade normally or close at 1:00 p.m.

Three quick rules cover most of it:

  • If stocks are closed, bonds are usually closed too. Good Friday is the main exception to check each year.
  • If it's Columbus Day or Veterans Day, stocks trade and bonds don't.
  • If it's New Year's Eve, stocks run a full day while bonds stop at 2:00 p.m. ET.

Bond exchange-traded funds still trade on stock exchanges on Veterans Day, because the stock market is open. Their prices can drift from the underlying bonds when the cash market is shut, so don't read too much into a move.

How will 23-hour trading change market holidays?

From December 6, 2026, exchange trading will restart on the evening of a holiday, so a closed market can reopen hours earlier than you expect. Nasdaq says that if a holiday falls from Monday through Thursday, trading starts at 9:00 p.m. ET that night. NYSE Arca's FAQ describes the same approach.

Here's how that looks for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 18, 2027. There's no Sunday night session on January 17. The market stays shut through Monday, and overnight trading begins at 9:00 p.m. ET on Monday evening. Those trades carry Tuesday's date.

Thanksgiving works the same way once the session is live. On Thursday, November 25, 2027, overnight trading should restart at 9:00 p.m. ET, ahead of the Friday early close. News from the holiday could reach prices hours before the 9:30 a.m. open.

A Friday holiday works differently, because there's no regular overnight session on Friday nights. When Christmas falls on Friday, December 25, 2026, expect the next session to begin at 9:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, December 27. Confirm the exact hours with your broker, and read our guide to overnight stock trading rules for how the session works.

How should day traders plan around market holidays?

Day traders should plan around market holidays by checking the calendar on Sunday and adjusting three things: Position SizePosition size is the number of shares, contracts, or dollar value you deploy in a single trade — determined by the relationship between your account risk percentage, your dollar risk per share (distance to stop), and your account size ratheRead definition →, trading hours and any trades that would stay open through the closure.

  1. Mark the week. Note any closures, early closes and big data releases in your weekly preparation.
  2. Reduce size in thin sessions. Trade fewer shares on half days and on the sessions around them, when spreads can be wider.
  3. Decide before the close. Holding a position through a holiday exposes you to news you can't react to. Our three-day weekend playbook covers how to handle that risk.
  4. Check options expiration. Holidays can shift expiration and settlement dates, so confirm them with your broker.
  5. Protect your cash account. Plan around the extra settlement day on Veterans Day and Columbus Day.

The stock market is also closed every Saturday and Sunday. Some brokers offer weekday overnight trading through private venues, but that doesn't cover weekends, and low-volume conditions apply to those sessions as well.

Frequently asked questions

Is the stock market open on Columbus Day?
Yes, the stock market is open on Columbus Day, also known as Indigenous Peoples' Day. The NYSE and Nasdaq trade regular hours, while the bond market closes. The next Columbus Day falls on Monday, October 11, 2027, and like Veterans Day, it isn't a settlement day.
Is the stock market open on New Year's Eve?
Yes, the stock market is open for a full session on New Year's Eve. In 2026, the NYSE and Nasdaq trade regular hours on Thursday, December 31, though SIFMA recommends the bond market close at 2:00 p.m. ET. Stocks then close for New Year's Day on Friday, January 1, 2027.
Is the stock market open on Good Friday?
No, the stock market is closed on Good Friday, even though it isn't a federal holiday. The NYSE lists Good Friday as March 26 in 2027 and April 14 in 2028. Bond market hours on Good Friday can vary, so check SIFMA's calendar for that year.
Is the stock market open on Election Day?
Yes, the stock market is open on Election Day. It isn't one of the NYSE's listed holidays, and regular hours apply. Results usually arrive after the close, which is why election nights can produce large gaps the next morning.
What's the difference between a market holiday and a bank holiday?
A market holiday is a day the stock exchanges close, while a bank holiday is a day many banks close. The two lists overlap but aren't the same. Veterans Day and Columbus Day are bank holidays when stocks still trade, and Good Friday is a market holiday when many banks stay open.
Can I place a trade when the stock market is closed?
You can usually enter an order with your broker while the market is closed, but it won't execute until trading resumes. Your broker decides which order types it accepts, and a price can open far from your order. Use a Limit OrderA limit order is an instruction to buy or sell a security at a specified price or better — a buy limit will only execute at your price or lower, a sell limit will only execute at your price or higher, guaranteeing the price but not the fillRead definition → so that you set the worst price you're willing to accept.
